Its not the law that any business HAS to give references, but a lot of them don't.If you want references, its good to either get an Accommodation for a Good Job from your employer when they praise you or when you get a raise, or ask for a Letter of Reference for your personal file at home.....don't wait until AFTER you have left the job, because the employer wont usually waste their time to do something like that after you have already gone....Show more
Janita Tetlow: Most companies now do not give references. The reason is the exposure to legal liability. If I give a good reference to Joe Smith, who was a good worker, and refuse to give one to Fred Jones, who was not such a good worker, Fred can sue me. Even if he does not win, it still means I have to pay a lawyer and take a lot of time to defend myself. If someone calls for a reference, all we will do is confirm that the person worked for us from (date) to (date! ) and is / is not eligible to be rehired by our company if we have an opening....Show more
