Is there any such thing as "dog safe" landscaping?

Melvin Nakama: Yes, there are a lot of "dog safe" landscaping options. Rocks are one way to go, as long as the rocks are large enough that the dog is unlikely to swallow them (dogs eat the dumbest things and some, though not all, dogs are prone to eating rocks). I would be leery of using rubber mulch as it sounds like something that a dog would be more likely to ingest than rocks or a standard organic mulch. The biggest things to avoid in a "safe" landscaping plan are toxic plants or building materials (such as cocoa mulch) and ground covers that are small enough to be easily ingested. It is also important to choose hardy plants that can handle being stepped on because most dogs don't differentiate between grass and flowers. Using physical barriers around plant beds (such as retaining walls or fencing) can discourage some dogs from laying in or stepping on plants but not all dogs will respect the boundaries...especially if the owner does not put in the effort to train ! them not to cross that line....Show more
